  but, alas! degenerated and later on were ruined by Western hubris. In such a context, the following articles by two philosophers reflect on some neglected aspects of "modernisation" in China, aspects that go beyond science, technology and trade. Zhang Xian of Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, first draws a parallel on the ways Christianity and Marxism, despite antithetic and deep differences, developed their influences in "modern" China. On the other hand, You Xilin of the Shenxi Normal University, Xi'an, grounds his reflections on the “Christian Culture” generated by Christianity as it engages itself in the public domain; Christian Culture's influence is a necessary medium for modernisation.
