The silent demise, on August 3rd, of Alexander Solzhenitsyn in Moscow should not prevent any one from recalling the influence he exerted in his lifetime. The world certainly has evolved from "cold war patterns" into the unsuspected globalization’s new challenges and crises. Certainly closer nowadays, East and West remain on the road to better understanding. The “Archives Institute on the Introduction of Western Learning to the East” (西学东渐文献馆), recently established (December 1st 2007) by the Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, has run a few months later, with the cooperation of the Macau Ricci Institute, an International Conference on “Western Learning and Cultural Awareness” (西学东渐与文化自觉). An important delegation from the Poznan University and the Gniezno Europæum Collegium, Poland, took part in the conference. It is therefore fitting that this issue includes an Obituary “In Memoriam Professor Professor Mieczysław Jerzy Künstler (金斯德, 1933-2007)”, the eminent Sinologist who, as Dr Ewa Zajdler his former student writes, resumed and developed Chinese studies in his country.
