At a time when Macau is attracting a lot of attention mainly for the crowds of Chinese tourists and other nationals drowning themselves (and their savings) in Western style casinos, it is worth recalling the past several centuries of East-West cultural and “learning” encounters that were initiated in this small city.   Zhang Xianyong, from Sun-Yat Sen University, Guangzhou, reports on a recent international conference held last year in Dongguan, Guangdong, on a process facing new challenges: the “Eastward Spread of Western Learning and Cultural Awareness”. The other is published in memoriam of someone who had lived mainly in Hong Kong, but also in Macau, yet not addicted to gambling for easy money. He wanted to better know and understand the silent history of the people whom neither historians nor the media speak about. Tereza Sena, from the Macau Ricci Institute, commemorates the recent demise on April 7th 2008 of the Reverend Carl Thurman Smith (1918-2008), a Christian missionary and researcher on the local history of Christian communities of both cities.
