The new century is still in its youth—not even ten years old—that already some new factors and tendencies are like
hints suggesting the formation of a new configuration for this world: it would have deep influence for years to
come. Among these elements, the present issue focuses on the re-emergence of two important Asian countries in
their mutual relations: India and China. Both of them were re-born in mid-twentieth century, and are now re-
entering with vigour on the world stage. It is worth it to sum up the state of the matter by recalling the
evolution of their relationship so as to discern the fruits that it could produce in the future. The first
contribution, by Jean-François Huchet, is based on the difficult first decades of these relations, and develops
arguments to show that they would rather evolve towards a pragmatic than give birth to a strategic partnership.
The entire world would benefit from it, provided (perhaps) that the mutual understanding does not remain fostered
only by economic considerations, where competition and complementarity seem to be the main forces. This would
request a mutual deep understanding of the two old civilisations. This can only be achieved by large communities
of expatriates. In his contribution, Palavi Aiyar presents the “new Indian community” living in China, and some of

With recent demise of Bergman, Antonioni and Pavarotti the world suddenly lost its leading stars of reflection and beauty which ceased to shine on its blurred sky. On the other side, André Gide’s daughter, Catherine Gide’s finding of her father, a longtime hidden from readers eye, an erotic novel “Le Ramier” (Sucker) 1907 (Gallimard 2002) as well as more recent publication of unknown letters Gide has exchanged with Allégret (“André Gide—Marc Allégret—Correspondance 1917 -1949” Gallimard 2005), both publications has launched once again that great writer to the renewed evaluation and historical retrospective. Throughout last century these two film directors and French man of letters has played an important role of critical thinking educators as well as they became, in their own times, so called “semaphores” against cheap ideologies in force and against the current of generally accepted ideas. As intellectuals, they have fulfilled their first moral duty that is to be aware of events of time and space and above all to be intelligent. Consequently, their distinctive influence still can be seen in nowadays China. Two contributions in this issue would illustrate the point. – In the first, Liu Dong, from Beijing Univer2008-02-21e contemporary literature. The analysis centers on the novel “The Counterfeiters”. His comments were given at the Macau Ricci Institute at the occasion of the launching of Artur Wardega’ s book: “ The Technique of mise en abyme (story within story) as employed in Andre Gide’ s Les Faux-Monnayeurs (The Counterfeiters)”, published last March in Beijing. In a second article Mao Shihui, from the Polytechnic Institute develops the great influence Antonioni and Bergman have exerted, in their time and later, on movie-making art and its public in China.

Four and a half centuries ago, Macau emerged from being a small mooring port used by tributary vessels into a vital and permanent point of contact of China with the outside world. A Ming official policy was established to deal with such a new reality that was also followed by the Manchu Emperors. It generated, however, a recurrent internal debate related to the new function exerted by the city and the presence of the Portuguese who had settled there, as discussed by Wu Zhiliang based on relevant Chinese sources. Luís Filipe Barreto´s article is focused on geographical and chronological aspects of the debate, Portuguese knowledge of the region and on the networks and regional contexts involved in Macau’s emerging process. By 1555, Macau had already been chosen as the most favourable place to become the centre of the Japan trade, a project previously submitted to trial in several other places in the region. From the “birth certificate of Macau” described by Barreto to China’s decision of keeping it as a “special port-city” opened to the outside world, as explained by Wu Zhiliang, both historical approaches highlight Macau’s present role in the wider contemporary horizon of China in a globalised world. Since Chinese and European civilisations have begun to meet at some deep level (late Ming dynasty in mid-sixteenth century of the Common or Christian Era), many features might characterise modern times. Among them, one still lingers in the heart of many minds: would the progress of scientific knowledge render obsolete the heritage of spiritual traditions? Or would both legacies remain irreconcilable? Despite several other challenges, a debate about the theory of Evolution has developed, mainly in North America, which touches on various relevant questions for the meaning of human life. If the forms of life on Earth have slowly evolved (as Darwin and his followers have concluded), is the theory of Evolution contrary to the concept of “Creation”? If it is not, can the theory of Evolution remain a scientific explanation of the Universe without recurring to some “intelligent design” at its very beginning? But is this notion of “design” coherent with up-to-date scientific research? In the first contribution of this section, John F. Haught, from Georgetown University, “argues that the notion of design is not only scientifically but also theologically inappropriate.” “Intelligent Design Theory” and its opposite, the materialistic interpretation of Evolution, could be compared to two “literal” readings of a text that cannot grasp its deeper meaning. In the second article, Vincent Shen Qingsong, from the University of Toronto, grounds his reflections on the early ages of Chinese thought. This tradition discerns, in the many “changes” of “myriad of things”, the beauty of the harmonious Universe (as the Chinese classic Yi Jing testifies in reference to the Dao). Accordingly, the dynamics of evolution cannot only be the passive adaptation to survive, as commonly understood; it is the quest for some fuller form of life. And for the human being, this quest is not only “divination”, but it leads actively towards the responsible meaning attached to existential decisions . Yves Camus

Various academic events in several places have this year celebrated the bi-centennial anniversary of Robert Morrison’s arrival in China, on September 4 1807. The city of Macau, where he spent most of his life and where his remains lie in the Old East India Protestant Cemetery, has been the environment that has fostered many of his Christian talents of an evangelist and a scholar. His biography and his influence on the encounter of China with Christian Faith is quite well known and documented by a large bibliography, that recently has included also some new publications at the occasion of this commemorative year. It was nevertheless fitting that the Macau Ricci Institute joins in the celebration by presenting to the readers of Chinese Cross Currents Tereza Sena’s contribution. Through new research, the author stresses the importance of some not so well known aspects of Morrison’s linguistic training, his contributions in the translation of the Christian Bible, and his relations to the works of some of his predecessors in the developing fields of modern Sinology.
