Humanism and Cultural TraditionsDue to modernity, humanism and cultural traditions are facing new challenges unlike any before in their history. China, albeit an atheistic state, inherits Taoist, Buddhist, Islamic and Christian communities, not to speak of the spiritual traditions of its various ethnic populations. All have been exposed not only to an ideological criticism but also to the common difficulty of developing humanistic values in a world deeply influenced by materialism. Our time is an age of religious dialogue and of the quest for beauty and dignity of human being. The Institute encourages research by Chinese and foreign scholars on Chinese philosophy, aesthetics and literature. Their serious study efforts will contribute to a better and mutual understanding by the different spiritual traditions already present in China. Such research and a more common understanding will help to dispel various materialistic misconceptions that hinder authentic humanistic quest. The benefits that communities and individuals draw from the common human search for meaning contribute to the overall building up of the Chinese society and nation. |
