Based primarily in China, Dr. Stephan Rothlin S.J. has gained an international reputation for providing dynamic promotion, support and inspiration for the worldwide practice of ethics in business and commerce. He has consistently epitomized best practices while offering educational consulting and sound business precepts that encourage the business community and society at large to look at honesty, integrity, respect, transparency and responsibility as being an indispensable part of the proper conduct of business activities.
Dr. Rothlin S.J. was born in Zürich, Switzerland. Throughout his professional life, he has been a transformative force in the field of ethical thought and its application in the Chinese context. His approach to ethics is holistic and collaborative, always aiming to synergize our world’s cultural and wisdom traditions to discover common principles to work from. In particular, Dr. Rothlin’s academic and professional contributions to the area of international business ethics has been especially efficacious, raising awareness about the power and influence of business in a globalized world and how through it we can bring about a truly common good.
Dr. Rothlin acquired two Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees, in Philosophy, Theology and Ethics, from universities in Rome, Munich and Paris. He completed his academic studies in 1991 with a PhD in Moral Theology, Economics and Philosophy at the State University of Innsbruck, Austria, and is fluent in six languages, including Chinese, English, German, Italian, French, and Spanish.
From 1992 – 1998, he was the Executive Director of the Academic Center (AKI in Zürich) and professor at the Institute of Management and Economics of the University of Zürich in Switzerland.
From 1998 - 2005, he served as the Associate Director of The Beijing Center for Chinese Studies in Beijing. Since his relocation to Beijing in 1998, he has become a sought-after guest lecturer in International Business Ethics, having taught at various universities throughout Asia, including Renmin University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, The Central Party School and the INSEAD Business School in Singapore.
From 2005 – 2013, he was the Secretary General of the Center for International Business Ethics, Beijing, and Chairman of the Association of International Business Ethics in Hong Kong. He serves as the CEO and Founder of Rothlin International Management Corporate Social Responsibility Consulting in Beijing.In 2015 he was appointed as Director of the Macau Ricci Institute.

Dr. Felipe Bacalso, Ph.D

Vice Director of the Macau Ricci Institute
Dr. Felipe Bacalso is the Vice-Director of the Macau Ricci Institute and graduated from Boston College, Massachusetts, USA with a Ph.D. in sociology. He finished his undergraduate studies at Xavier University, Philippines, with a bachelor's degree in philosophy. He also studied for a bachelor's in sacred theology and a master's in divinity at St. Bellarmino School of Theology in Taiwan. He is fluent in English and Mandarin Chinese, with a background in the secondary and tertiary level of Spanish, as well as Tagalog and Cebuano languages. He has taught as a full-time assistant professor in the Department of Sociology at Fu Jen Catholic University, New Taipei City, Taiwan. The courses taught in Mandarin Chinese and English included Introduction to Sociology, Sociology of Education, Sociology of Religion, Sociology of Immigration, as well as Introduction to University Life, Philosophy of Life, and Professional Ethics. With an emphasis on the integration of academics and practicum, he organized Service-Learning activities in Taiwan and facilitated volunteerism programs in Cambodia and the Philippines for students from Fu Jen Catholic University and Sun Yat-sen University in Zhuhai, China. Identifying with the youth in society, he has attended youth camps and training in Taiwan and in the Philippines. Currently, he is teaching Social Doctrine of the Church, Christian Attitudes to War, Peace, and Revolution, Sociology of Religion, Axiology and Ethics, and Theological English in the Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy at the University of St, Joseph (Macau).

Dr. Jarosław Duraj, S.J. was born in Poland. He majored in philosophy (Cracow) and theology (Warsaw). He earned a postgraduate licentiate in Missiology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, after which he pursued Mandarin Chinese language studies, first in Taipei, and then in Beijing. In 2008 he obtained a M.A. in Buddhist Studies (with distinction) from the University of Hong Kong. Moreover, he pursued postgraduate research on Chinese Buddhism at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London. In 2017 he earned his Ph.D. in political philosophy from the Pontifical Gregorian University (PUG) in Rome.Currently, based in Macau, he serves as the Researcher at the Macau Ricci Institute (MRI) and is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy at the University of St. Joseph (USJ). His research interests focus on political philosophy, interreligious dialogue, intercultural philosophy, Chinese Studies and Buddhist Studies.
