Introduction

The Franciscan missionary Giovanni da Montecorvino acted in Beijing during the Yuan Dynasty as one of the first ambassadors of peace and faith between China and the West. The lecture is thus focused on missionary and cultural diplomacy along the Silk Road namely by Giovanni Marignolli OFM, Francesco Sambiasi SJ, Vittorio Ricci OP, Giuseppe Castiglione SJ, Ferdinando Moggi SJ, and Francesco Folleri SJ who wanted to genuinely share their skills and enter into a sincere dialogue with the Chinese people. In midst of the pandemic crisis there seems to be an even stronger need to better understand cultural exchanges between China and the West. This would lay the ground for an urgent quest for peace and fraternity based on the inspiring example of the pioneer missionaries in China.
