Launch of a New Bilingual Classical Texts and Studies Book Series in Chinese
The Centre for Catholic Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Faculty of Arts) is pleased to announce the launch of a new bilingual book series, Bilingual Classical Texts and Studies (古典本文與研究叢書), the first of its kind in the Chinese-speaking scholarly world. While Western researchers have long benefited from bilingual critical editions such as Sources Chrétiennes, the Patrologia series, or the Budé collection, no equivalent resource has existed for Chinese-speaking historians, philologists, philosophers, and theologians working on ancient and medieval texts. The series focuses primarily on patristic literature, while encompassing more broadly foundational texts from Antiquity to the Middle Ages transmitted in Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Arabic, and Coptic. Each volume presents critically edited source texts alongside Chinese translations, with scholarly introductions and annotations commensurate with the standards of the European series on which the project is modeled. The series is edited by Alexis Balmont, Antoine Ren, Colten Cheuk-Yin Yam, and Lai Pan-Chiu (all of The Chinese University of Hong Kong), and benefits from the support of an international advisory committee mainly drawn from leading universities across mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The inaugural volume, a Chinese critical translation and annotation of Book I of Irenaeus of Lyon's Against Heresies, is scheduled for publication in May 2026, to coincide with the international conference Recovering the Past: Critical Edition and Translation of Ancient Classical Texts (CUHK, 15-16 May 2026), which will gather Western and Chinese distinguished scholars in classical philology, codicology, and biblical and patristic studies. Chinese-speaking scholars wishing to contribute to the series, whether by submitting a translation or commentary, or signaling relevant work in progress, are warmly invited to contact the executive editor, Alexis Balmont (This email address is being protected from spambots.
